Manufacturing HVAC assemblies for the Berlin Metro project

Saku Metall Subcontracting is manufacturing ventilation and air-conditioning assemblies for the Berlin Metro project through 2033.

In 2020, Berlin’s public transport operator ordered 1,500 new metro trains from Stadler, which won the international tender to supply trains for Berlin’s U-Bahn network.

Saku Metall Subcontracting manufactures welded aluminium assemblies used in the trains’ ventilation and air-conditioning systems. The production of these assemblies involves several manufacturing processes, including laser cutting, bending, wet riveting, welding, powder coating and final assembly. Once all production stages are complete, the finished assemblies are shipped to Germany, where the trains are manufactured.

The first trains of the new series were completed in autumn 2023. The new fleet increases transport capacity and helps improve public transport services in Berlin. In addition to reliability, increased seating capacity and air conditioning, the trains feature modern, energy-efficient drive technology.

S-Bahn CEO Peter Buchner commented: “We have received a great deal of positive feedback on the new trains from both passengers and employees. The new trains have already covered around 17 million kilometres. Every day, S-Bahn trains carry 1.4 million passengers across 16 lines in Berlin and the state of Brandenburg.”
